Blaine Whitford

Blaine Whitford started her career as an artist in kindergarten in Atlanta, GA in about 1960. Always the ‘kid who could draw’, Blaine hung out in the art departments of her grammar, high school and colleges learning what she could and trying to figure out how to parlay that into a real job.

She had a few paid assignments in her teen years and at twenty-two, after a stint in newspaper composing rooms and advertising layout departments, she finally entered the professional commercial art world. First as a ‘gopher’ in a busy Atlanta photography studio and then as an apprentice in a major local design studio, she worked her way up through the ranks, and was named as Associate Designer at Atlanta’s well-known Art Service, Inc. Design Studio. For the next twenty-three years, Blaine worked in various positions in associated industries including advertising sales, photography director, art director, packaging graphics designer, trade show design, sales and more. She ran her own production design company for over seven years in Atlanta and St. Simons Island, GA, with clients such as Seth Thomas, HBI, Inc, ABC Home Health and Westclox, among others in her portfolio. She left the professional advertising world having achieved the status of Production Manager for one of Houston’s (TX) most prestigious design firms.

In the year 2000, she moved to Saint Petersburg, FL, to pursue a career in painting.

Her original interest was large format brightly colored graphic designs. With no professional fine arts training, Blaine was left to discover styles, usage and technique on her own. Her graphic style and eye for design and marketing did well, and she soon began selling large pieces in area restaurants and galleries.

Her quest for size increased and her efforts turned to murals where seven years later, and with a lot of hard work and numerous influential clients, Blaine’s work is now a staple in homes and businesses in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties in Florida, as well as in Gulfport, Mississippi. Her work can be seen at www.spacegirlart.com.

Interest in a new direction has brought her full circle to floor cloths. “They are large paintings for the floor. It’s as simple as that,” says Whitford. “It’s a natural next step.”

She has studied many techniques and is currently developing her own style in this exciting and contemporary medium with her new business, “Custom Canvas Carpets.”
